Beyond installing solar panel systems, we install battery storage systems, electric vehicle chargers, solar monitoring, and the revolutionary Span smart electric panel. Such smart-home technology has grown rapidly due to its success and positive customer reviews. It’s important to invest in well-tested and well-reviewed products – that’s why internet influencers like Matt Ferrell are an important resource. As a homeowner with solar, Span reached out to Matt for him to review their latest version of the Span smart electric panel. As the only Certified Span installer in Massachusetts, Span sent Matt to Solaris Renewables for his installation.

Span’s REVolutionary Technology For Your Home
Span is a smart electric panel, replacing your existing panel with one that lets you control every circuit in your home right from your phone. Span allows you to have control over your whole house, giving you control to turn circuits on and off. Real-time monitoring gives insight to your home’s energy at all points during the day. It also optimizes battery efficiency and storage. The Span panel pairs seamlessly with battery storage to bring reliable backup power during power outages.
Here are some of Matt’s favorite features about Span:
1. Streamlined Energy Use
The overall goal of Span is to consolidate all of a home’s energy information and give insight into power usage. Knowledge of energy designation can make it easier to reduce energy expenses. Matt claims that “it’s kind of a no-brainer to go with the flexibility and added smarts of Span vs. hard-wiring a solution that requires an electrician and extra money to change down the road and that can’t help you streamline your energy use.”
2. Enhanced Battery Storage
Span allows for proper energy designation within your home and battery. In his video, Matt explains that Span, “gives you some incredible control and insights into where your electricity is going, when, and how much. It means you can get more out of fewer home batteries.” Alongside the Span panel, the return on investment from your solar and battery system is accelerated.
3. The Span App
The beauty of the Span panel comes to life with the Span app. In the app, homeowners can set power priorities in real-time. The app allows for customizing all circuits. Not only can a homeowner group together breakers, but they can see how much power every device and appliance in their house is using with just a few clicks. In cases of power outages, Span offers prioritizing of energy. Categories are “Must Have, “Nice to Have”, and “Not Essential”. If, during a storm and your much-needed Powerwall hits 50% or lower, anything in the “Nice to Have” group gets switched off during a blackout. The “Not Essential” group gets shut off immediately in a blackout condition.
Span knows how much each circuit is using and it gives an estimate for how long each battery will last during an outage at its current charge versus a full charge. The app shows you estimates for how much additional battery time you can get if you move a circuit to one of the other groups.
Matt also explains that the app has a feed of insights based on your energy usage, such as highlighting any circuits that have high energy consumption at any given time. It can tell you how much solar energy you generate and how much of your use it covers. It even calls out specific circuits that are 100% solar-powered.
4. Compatibility With Your Home
Span has a range of features that are helpful for homeowners of all kinds. Span connects effortlessly with home appliances, battery storage systems, and even Amazon Alexa, allowing voice-activated control of your circuits. There are more updates to come in hopes of integrating more home technology, and the product will update automatically whenever an update comes out.
Ready For A Smart Home Upgrade?
At the end of Matt’s video, he explains how much he enjoys Span and that he looks forward to the upcoming features and updates. We couldn’t agree more. Going solar always pays off, both environmentally and financially. Combining Span with solar and/or battery storage enhances your smart-home setup even further.
